The Monte Rosa is an almost endless succession
of summit higher than 4000 metres. In fact the
massif has a good 17 of such peaks with the
highest Punta Dufour, 4634 m high.
Monte Rosa, in the past centuries, was known as
the “great glacier” and its name actually comes
from the local toponym meaning “glacier”.
Capanna Regina Margherita, the highest refuge in
Europe, stands on the top of Punta Gnifetti, at
an altitude of 4554 metres above sea level. It
was commissioned by the Queen Margherita (a
frequent visitor in Gressoney) and officially
inaugurated in 1893 by the Queen herself.
The several high and medium mountain trips, the
great variety of tracks, the rock-climbing walls
and the fantastic climbing routes, make
Gressoney a paradise for mountain lovers.
